Education and Professional Experience
With a B.S. in Industrial Hygiene and minors in Chemistry and Spanish from Utah State University, Mr. Drown earned certification as a comprehensive practitioner from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene  (CIH) and certification as a comprehensive practitioner from the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (CSP).

Early in his career he specialized in industrial hygiene with experience in the semi-conductor wafer fabrication industry, petroleum refining, and specialty chemicals. The major part of Mr. Drown's career has been in the specialty chemical industry practicing as a safety and health generalist at the plant leadership level followed by 6 years as a global EHS Senior Manager working in Brazil, China, Denmark, England, Finland, Germany, Netherlands, Philippines, Scotland, and Singapore.

During his chemical plant safety manager tenure Mr. Drown led the engineering team to implement the Process Safety Management Standard (Cal/OSHA T8CCR 5189, Fed OSHA 29CFR 1910.119). In 1995 he began to develop a long-lasting relationship with the Cal/OSHA Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) team and prepared his site for certification several years later as the first business in San Diego to earn VPP STAR site status. The road to VPP STAR included implementation of several best practice programs including:

  • Behavior-based safety process implementation
  • Increased emergency response team capability
  • Incident investigation process training
  • Construction of a new occupational health clinic
  • Ergonomics training
  • Contractor EHS management
  • Security upgrades

Being promoted to a multi-national role was Mr. Drown's opportunity to find common ground in the EHS profession to produce a unified global EHS team. This was accomplished through planning professional conferences and the implementation of a global safety and health auditing program based on the International Safety Rating System. His outgoing personality and interest in cultural diversity and language were natural compliments to this assignment. He also provided EHS input to many multi-million dollar capital projects and plant expansions during these years of international work.

In recent years, prior to beginning consulting full-time, Mr. Drown was working globally on implementation of a set of standards patterned after Responsible Care 14001. In his last corporate position he led the EHS team in a Biotech/Biopharma company to certification in ISO 14001 (Environmental Management System). He also served as Biosafety Officer.

Mr. Drown can communicate effectively in Spanish and Portuguese.
